Singapore University Games (SUNIG)

Hi Guys,

I just thought to include some background information about the upcoming tournament to keep the freshman/ new joiners in the know.

The Singapore University Games is a tournament held between the 4 universities in Singapore, namely NUS, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM). Various sports are played and a medal tally decides the overall champion amongst the colleges.

Last year's competition saw NUS win the overall title, but unfortunately the soccer team did not perform as well as we expected; we came in 3rd behind NTU and SMU.

In the previous SUNIG, soccer was played as a one day "carnival" in short 30 minute matches. This year, however, has seen a revival of the full 90 minute matches. Also note that NUS will be competing with the conceivably weaker SMU and SIM sides prior to meeting our closest rivals NTU.

We will be registering a squad of 22 players for the coming SUNIG. As many of you might suspect, this means that several of you will be unable to compete in the tournament. As such, do take the coming week as a final opportunity to demonstrate your merits on the pitch for Coach to assess you accordingly.

For those who are not selected for the tournament, do understand that this in no way means that you are cut from the squad. Sometimes selection processes may seem harsh, but they are often a difficult balancing act between the needs of the team at present, the desire to expose younger players to competition climate, and other relevant considerations.

I'll see you guys at training.

Cheers
