Wed 26 August and Thurs 27 Aug

Wed 26 Aug
Training @ SRC Field 1
Time: 645pm
Attire: Red/ Blue

Thurs 27 Aug
Training @ SRC Field 1
Time: 645pm
Attire: Red/ Blue

(1) Rearrangement of training days

Because it is the Muslim fasting month, the team will not be training on Sat mornings for the next few weeks. We have arranged for trainings to be on weekday evenings so that the guys fasting will be able to break fast shortly after training commences and most of the training session will be manageable for our guys.

This alternative arrangement has been made specially so that we can maximize attendance during Ramadan, so I hope that the Muslim guys will do their best to continue coming for training over the next few weeks.

(2) Training attendance/ stating availability

Training attendance was quite poor today, with only about 15 people showing up on time even though our training squad is currently almost 40, and fewer than 10 posted unavailability for today's training.

In future, please state if you are not coming for training (whether you are a senior or new player), and please do so a reasonable time beforehand. [E.g. I am unable to come for Thursday's training because I have an evening tutorial.] Please do not absent yourself from training without letting us know.

Please only text Fabian, Daowei or Chris if you are unable to come for urgent reasons.

(3) The Schedule Ahead

For the coming weeks, the team will be focussed on preparing for the Singapore University Games (SUniG). This is a small tournament held between the 4 recognized universities in Singapore, and will be held some time in the middle of September. A variety of sports will be played, and of course, the Soccer team will be participating.

The fixtures are currently not confirmed, but will be shared with the team in due course. We will be playing each of the other universities once, and the current defending champion of SUniG is Singapore Institute of Management (SIM).

For this tournament, Coach will be selecting about 22 players (will let you all know the confirmed number as soon as I find out) to represent NUS. All players, those graduating with NUS and exchange students, are eligible to play.

So I urge everyone to fight for your place in the SUniG team. Obviously training performance and attendance will count towards each individual's chances, so I hope this will be the added impetus for everyone to attend trainings and perform well during friendly matches.

Cheers

Chris

Hey...still the schedule is really tough as we muslim players would be fasting and then surely they cannot play just as soon as they break fast as we have to pray as well....and are rally short on stamina due to the fast...

So, i would not be training this Month...hope you understand...

Chris said...

sorry who is this? i understand the schedule is tough and i don't want to impose anything on you guys - i am not fasting myself so i wouldn't know how tough it really is

but i do understand that over the years, many of our muslim guys have continued training during Ramadan - on Monday, for example, Yasin Hatta and Aziz still managed to attend training

so while i do not want to make it compulsory for our Muslim guys to attend every training during the next few weeks, i still want to encourage you guys to still show up as much as possible

if you need a short break to break fast, consume some food and drink, or to do prayers, it is completely understandable. if you are unable to make it for some of the trainings, also no one will fault you.

but being absent for the entire next 4 weeks will be quite detrimental to your own fitness and for the team to move forward.

also if anyone has any pressing concerns and wishes to address me privately, my email/ number is always open to you.

regards,

chris

To Chris and the team:

Thanks for your superb response to the first comment. After reading the comment, I would like to clear the air just so this doesn't become an issue. Whoever the commenter is, he does not represent the other Muslims in the team.

As many of you know, Muslims fast in Ramadhan because its one of the 5 pillars of being a Muslim. We don't eat from dawn till dusk, we guard ourselves from the temptations of the world. Another reason why we fast is also to put ourselves in the shoes of the poor and hungry.

What a lot of us Muslims forget is that Muslims are not supposed to expect or ask for special treatment during Ramadhan. The world does not change, just because its Ramadhan. If we change and dumbdown our activities just because we fast, the very purpose of fasting is practically thrown out the window. Fasting is not an excuse, but rather a challenge for us Muslims to test ourselves in the name of the Almighty. "On no soul does Allaah place a burden greater than it can bear." Qur'an 2:286. Thus, we try our best and that is all that is asked of us.

Having said that, on behalf of the others, I'd like to thank Chris and the rest of the team for understanding our situation. Its heartening to know that we are being thought of. We will keep coming to training and try our best to keep up (though for me, I have problems keeping up even on normal days.... you guys are kuda-s.)

Well, thats that. See you tomorrow.

I agree wholeheartedly with Sham's point. Really appreciate what the team is doing to accommodate the Muslims. This really exemplifies what the Prime Minister said during his National Day Rally.

Anyway I can't make it for Wednesday's training due to outside commitments. Will be back on Thursday.

Very heartening to see these issues being talked about and finding a common ground. Hope we can carry on this way for all issues.

To Sham: Don't worry about not being able to keep up for now. Keep working hard. We all can see u r putting in the effort. And great response to Chris. Never knew the real meaning behind Ramadhan till i read that.
