NUS 0-1 SMU

In a heavily contested match between hosts NUS and their SMU counterparts, a dipping free kick gave the visitors a memorable win and 3 valuable points in the bag.

It was clear from the beginning that both teams were playing with fire in their bellies. Tackles were hard, the midfield battle was robust and uncompromising, and both defences held their forts. A few well strung attacks by NUS were snuffed out by the SMU defence, as were SMU's long balls adequately dealt with by the home team.

In the second half NUS made a few changes to the side, with fresh legs brought into the attack. Subsequently, Vincent came close with a long range shot from outside the penalty box. The introduction of Elfi also changed the attacking dynamics, as he came close on at least two instances, the most spectacular in the form of a brilliant bicycle kick.

In the later stages of the second half, SMU converted a free kick from outside the box to take the advantage and seal the game.

But with two matches yet to be played, NUS' tournament is far from over.

guys, just want to apologise for the slightly harsh comments after the game when everyone was feeling down. It's ok to feel disappointed. we must understand that this is a new team, and like every team in the world, we need time to gel and understand each other's game.

Let's pick ourselves up and look to the next game. I'm very sure we can put on a better performance. Reflect on our mistakes, learn from them and I'm sure we will win on monday.

Hydrate and rest well.
