NUS 2-1 NTU

The last match of SUNIG ended on a high note for the NUS football team. A 2-1 win over rivals NTU gave them a chance to win SUNIG.
Coach Arasu noted the need for a win in this match but balanced it against the need to give some experience to newer players and to rest a few tired legs. He made a few surprises with his starting line up.

The first half was a scrappy affair where both teams struggled to stamp their authority on the game. Each side had one good chance each to open the scoring. For NTU, it came around the 25th min as KT was put through on goal after the defence was caught napping. Fortunately, he hit the post and the ball went out for a goal kick. NUS then responded with a great cross by Eeto when it seemed he was left with no place to go. Rama made a good connection only to be denied by a fantastic reflex save by Tian Ci, the NTU keeper.

Coach Arasu decided to bring on some experience at half time. Sudhi and Vincent came on for Dillon and Hatta. It proved to be an inspired substitution as Sudhi provided a telling cross for Elfi for NUS to break the deadlock and score his first goal for NUS as he rose above the NTU defence to head it into the back of the net.
As NTU pushed forward in search of the equaliser, they met a big obstacle in the heart of the NUS defence in the form of Fredrick. "The Great Dane" made sure nothing went past him and had a tremendous game. The next big moment of the match came as NUS counter attacked from an NTU corner. It became a 3 vs 1 situation as the NUS players flooded forward. A teasing cross by Sudhi was met by a sliding Elfi but he hit the same post that KT hit half an hour before. NUS then enjoyed a spell of possession and once even had 4 corners in a row. Sudhi then hit the bar from a pretty acute angle with the keeper beaten while Eeto headed agonisingly wide from a set piece.

NUS eventually got their second goal as a well weighted pass set Cheng Wei free, and he did not disappoint, smashing it was his usual consistency into bottom right corner. It seemed NUS were home and dry now, but NTU showed their spirit. A free kick near the corner flag was whipped in. Aziz came out to punch, but uncharacteristically missed, leaving Winston to score from 3 yards and leaving some nervy on the NUS bench.

In the end, NUS held on for a win. But it was not to be enough to win SUNIG as SMU secured a 3-0 win over SIM relegating NUS to the runners up.
