Please let me know, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, about your financial commitment for year end trip to Thailand. Considering we are flying up, cost of games, transport and hotel etc will be a considerable amount in total.
We are looking at each individual forking out approximately $400. Is this ok for you guys?

Generally speaking you shouldn't expect to spend much, perhaps a few meals on your own. And considering how cheap things are there, that shouldn't be much more.

roger Chris. if $400 means all the necessities are covered, including estimated daily meal costs, it would be okay. meaning that if we brought $400 and we'd be comfortable, not hungryorthirsty minus luxuries, its reasonable considering the period we're going.
of course I still hope it can go down further. perhaps if we personally call Ecotel personally and inform them of our mass booking, we can receive special prices for the rooms? and from there we save further by squeezing people illegally? its kiasu a bit but every dollar not spent on accommodation, is one more dollar on other stuffs. just my opinion!

yup no worries about group discounts etc; external travel/ tour agency is giving us a quotation so it's pretty much already bargained for
the cost quoted to you guys is what will be collected beforehand, and excludes any other additional costs that may be incurred (e.g. meals other than breakfast)
we are currently looking into how to lower costs. rest assured that we understand this is the principal consideration

just to keep things in perspective, i know the absolute figure to be paid matters the most to us as students, but consider the following:
(1) the cost of a return ticket to bangkok on SIA is approximately SGD450. on jetstar its approx SGD390. if you pay 400, its for flight, hotel, games, transport, some meals
(2) going overseas on a soccer trip is unlike normal overseas trips. you experience matches against top opponents, you know how people from different cultures/ training background play, and you learn a lot from a footballing perspective
(3) you bond as a team. attending 20 to 30 training sessions will not let you get to know your team mates as much as staying, eating, sleeping, playing together. from past experience, the trip is always extremely important for the team to get to know each other off the field. with such a large number of the team together playing games, it also helps everyone forge a deep understanding on the pitch.
(4) this is part of your NUS experience. so many students go to uni for the sole purpose of getting a degree. they go to lectures, take exams, get a scroll. we are different in that we play sports, and not just recreationally but competitively. live a little, spend your dec break playing some good football. give your uni life an edge, take back some memories.
for the above reasons (and more), i hope you guys can see beyond the quoted price of the trip as just a nominal figure. if you see the value behind the dollar, i hope the cost doesn't appear as intimidating.

Just want to add to Chris's points:
Playing against teams from countries like Thailand and Vietnam will provide us a very good footballing experience. Unlike Malaysian teams, whose standards are more of less comparable to Singaporean teams, these thais are naturally technically gifted and possess the speed and fitness way above Singaporeans (i'm sure u guys who watch the recent game will know). They play a brand of passing and moving, with lots of off-the-ball-running. It's good for us to learn from them, and also learn to play against them.
Trust me, the feeling of playing overseas is an experience which will last a lifetime. In future, u can show ur grandchildren that u have played (better still, win) against top-quality thai teams.
On that note, if anyone sincerely has any real difficulties in trying the raise the money, you guys are welcomed to talk to Chris, Daowei or myself in private. I'm quite sure we can try to work things out. As a team, we wouldn't want to leave anyone behind just because of the cost.We want to go as a team, come back as a team and win the IVP as a team.
If not, let's try to save some money in the next few weeks and prepare for the trip!

if you wanna fight who is the most super giam person, you can ask anyone - it's me.
i would encourage all to go for this trip. the bonding is beyond football as you can really make friends for life.
from a pure economic point of view, you have to take into account your future earnings as well. let's just take $400 - that's about a dollar a day for about a year, 50 cents a day for 2 years, and assuming you'll be working for the next 20 years, you get my drift.
again, as anonymous said - peer pressure is shit. dilarang merokok. in this case, this is really just an encouragement to go. nobody's ever gonna look down upon you for not going. if they do, they weren't worth much as friends in the first place, so you're better off without them.
i say again, do try to make it for the trip, any trip really. and the main rule for those who are indeed going - room doors not allowed to be locked. that will give you all the bonding you need ;)
oh, and as a smaller point, from a social democratic point of view, for those who are willing, they can pay and extra $5-$10. if 20 do so, i'm sure the pooled funds can help out as well.
again, no peer pressure applies. this is a democracy.
